Sawdust is the main ingredient of high yielding commercial substrates fruiting blocks. Generally supplemented with Soy Hulls or Wheat Bran for optimal source of nitrogen and protein.

Our sawdust is sourcing locally in WA as a bi-product of timber industry. It’s guaranteed virgin  (non chemically treated) hardwood sawdust and is the same raw ingredient used in our farm to produce mushroom blocks.

It is a non screwed sawdust, with a range of particle sizes from dust size <0.5mm to small shavings of up to 5mm. This blend is ideal for mushroom production as small particles will absorb more water content, and bigger particles will add air pockets in the substrate, helping mycelium run.

Wheat Bran Supplemented Substrate Mix Recipes:
Use from 20% to 50% wheat bran to hardwood sawdust
Example 20% supplemented:
1 part wheat bran 5 parts hardwood sawdust (in weight)
Hydrated to 50 to 60% to field capacity (depending on your sawdust, fresh timber will not retain as much water as very well aged and dry timber sawdust)

Example Master Mix Recipe:
1 part soy hull, 1 part hardwood sawdust (in weight)
Hydrated to 55 to 60% to field capacity (depending on your sawdust, fresh timber will not retain as much water as very well aged and dry timber sawdust)
We like to add about 45% to 50% water, mix and wait for soy hulls to dissolve for about 1hour. Then add water  slowly and mixing and testing until achieve field capacity.
